Removing the Travel Agent Stigma

Allison Sodha

Being an agent has allowed me to connect, converse, and create with a diverse clientele of travelers to India and beyond. However, it has also allowed me to remove the stigma of travel agents as overpriced and unknowledgeable. Unfortunately, many travelers are skeptical at the affordability, expertise, and advocacy that an agent can provide. True, there are some agencies that price gouge and give poor customer service - even I have had disappointing interactions with others in the industry. I encourage travelers to research, ask questions, and select a travel company that is interested in the journey as much as the destination. I believe that it takes an agent the ability to listen, set honest expectations, and respect the individual requests of each traveler.

I recently received the following email from Jason K. in Minneapolis, who gave his permission to repost. Jason recently reserved a customized package to South India with Sodha Travel:

"I will admit, I was cautious about using an agency and had heard many unpleasant stories from friends and family. Mostly it revolved around inflated prices or poor services in the destination. But Sodha Travel won me over, with your ability to patiently answer my questions and in a timely manner. I also felt you were honest in your recommendations and didn't just suggest 5 star properties or expensive excursions. And, I realized almost immediately that you truly were a specialist on India and knew so much about traveling in the country. I never would have received the care or knowledge by booking online or with anyone else. You changed my mind on what a travel agent represents. Good job to you and your team."

Needless to say, this email made me and the team very happy. We strive to remove the stigma around agents, because we truly are passionate about what we do. Thank you, Jason, and we will continue to respectfully demonstrate our experience and advocacy with each client.
