View the Angkor temples in the soft light of the morning and ride the hidden trails to avoid the crowds. As the roosters begin to crow, you will be at the most important religious monument in Cambodia, watching the sun rise over the triple towers of Angkor Wat. Even in the monsoon season, this is a magical time to see Angkor. As the crowds thin, take an unforgettable walk through the temple where the soft light and cool temperatures present Angkor at its best. A short pedal away, a delicious breakfast spread awaits.

With bellies full, ride around the hidden trails of the Angkor complex and visit some of the best kept secrets and the iconic temples of Bayon, Ta Prom, and the Elephant Terrace. As the day heats up, enjoy lunch with a view of Sra Srang Lake and then return to your hotel in the afternoon.

Siem Reap

Kompong Khleang is a remote area dotted with wooden houses on 10-meter-tall stilts surrounded by water in the wet season and on the flood plains of the lake in the dry season. In recent years, it has grown in popularity but still provides an opportunity for an immersive experience.

Start with a visit to a local market, Phsar Thnal Chek. Continue to a local house where you will help prepare lunch and learn about Khmer cuisine in the fishing community.

In the afternoon, enjoy a wooden boat from Kompong Khleang to the Tonle Sap Lake. Both sides of the river are lined by floating houses that look amazing nestled on the great lake. From here you have a picturesque view of the floating house and local way of life. Enjoy a few drinks or sundowners on the boat before returning to Siem Reap.

This fascinating city with a dark history of war and turmoil is now filled with vibrancy, warmth, and rapid development.

Phnom Penh

After breakfast, meet your guide and driver in the morning to visit Wat Phnom, where a 14th century stupa and small pagoda stands. It is the tallest religious structure in the city and the oldest building in Phnom Penh. Then continue to the Royal Palace, built in 1866 under King Norodom, for a glimpse of Khmer architecture. A visit to the Royal Palace also includes a visit to the Silver Pagoda - named after its floor, which is covered with over 5000 silver tiles. Although some 60% of the pagoda's contents were destroyed under Pol Pot's regime, what remains is spectacular. This is one of the best places in all of Cambodia where objects embodying the brilliance of the Khmer civilization can still be viewed.

After the palace, continue to visit the National Museum with its huge collection of Khmer sculpture and artifacts recovered from the ancient Angkor Empire. Lunch will be at the local restaurant.

This afternoon, visit the Tuol Sieng Prison to glimpse the devastating horrors that prevailed during Cambodia's ultra-radical Marxist movement. This excursion may prove distressing for some; however, it is an important piece of Cambodia's recent past. Then, take an excursion to Choeng Ek, also known as the killing fields, located just outside of the city.
