A Note from Allison I have often encouraged travelers to contact their cell phone providers and inquire about the international service rates. Last week, I had a client, Natalie, return from India with a $2900 cell phone bill. She was shocked, especially since she never made any calls! Most of the excess charges were from checking voicemail, sending emails, and using the internet. Here is an excerpt from Natalie's email, reprinted with permission: You can imagine my shock when I checked my cell bill to find charges exceeding $2900! Although I took your advice and found out the rates for international calls and texting, I never considered the fees for searching the internet and sending emails. I also didn't think that checking my voicemail would be billed as roaming. Lesson learned. Remember, if you don't want to take the risk with your phone abroad, consider purchasing a local phone or sim card once you arrive. By the way: I am happy to report that Natalie's cell phone company reduced her bill by 70%, as a courtesy. Happy Travels, Allison Sodha, DS

1. In what year did India gain independence from the British? "I loved your Destination Guide and carried it with me throughout my trip. I especially enjoyed the list of food items and used it as a resource at the restaurants. During one of the follow-up calls from your local representative, I communicated my love of cooking and spices. The next day, the guide surprised me with a special trip to the spice shop and a visit to a local home for a cooking demonstration! It was the highlight of my trip. You did a remarkable job at planning my vacation and it was executed flawlessly. I can't say enough positive things about my experience with Sodha Travel!"
